Dec 14, I Brush, Floss, and Rinse but Still Have Chronic Bad Breath

by Rodni
(Kansas City)

I have chronic bad breath, but no one alerts me when it's bad. I can tell when it's bad, however, because whenever I speak to someone they try to step back or avoid me. I've gone to a dental school for regular check-ups and cleanings but have the same problem over and over.

I've used Sensodyne, Crest, Listerine, and TheraBreath products but still have the chronic bad breath. In addition, I always feel thirsty.

I've had chronic bad breath for over 3.5 years, and it's ruining my life. Every time I go for an interview, I get stressed out about it, and it just messes me up. I feel like giving up.

Could someone advise me as to what to do?

Gary's Response: I can feel your stress and frustration, Rodni, especially regarding interviews... Been there, done that, didn't like it one little bit.

Your post may contain a clue as to why none of the products you mentioned, particularly the TheraBreath products, did not work for you. You say you are thirsty all the time. I don't know what your age is, but is it possible that you have Diabetes? Constant thirst is one of the symptoms, and for some Diabetics, chronic bad breath is an issue.

Do you take any prescription medications for other conditions? Many of these methods cause dry mouth, which can contribute to bad breath.

Do you still have your tonsils? One other possibility that comes to mind is that you're developing tonsil stones.

Regardless of the cause, I think your first step is to get a checkup and let your doctor know about the chronic bad breath and especially about the constant thirst.

Good luck and please let us know what you find out.

Gary
